When the answer is yes
You need an engineer when the wall may carry floor or roof load, when a building official asks for a letter or a drawing, when a beam will span a new opening, or when the house has already been altered and nobody documented it. Most open-concept kitchens in older Indiana houses hit at least one of those.
A carpenter's span table is not a design. It does not check reactions at the ends, the post below, or the footing the post sits on. That is where open-concept jobs quietly fail.
What you get
Confirmation of whether the wall is bearing. If it is, a beam size, bearing, and a drawing or letter your builder and the jurisdiction can use. If it is not, you get that in writing too — which is sometimes the whole point of the visit.
